DAVIS COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $17,500 GRANT TO DCCPF FOR PRESERVATON PLANNING.
May 24, 2010
The Davis County Courthouse Preservation Fund (www.daviscountycourthouse.com) and the Davis County Board of Supervisors are happy to announce a $17,500 Grant from the Davis County Community Foundation for Preservation Planning for the Davis County Courthouse building and grounds.
The need for a complete report on the current condition of the building and comprehensive guidance in planning and completing preservation work was exacerbated by the discovery of rotted timbers in the clock tower structure and the June 2009 hailstorm.
The Davis County Courthouse Preservation Fund worked with the Supervisors to obtain the Davis County Community Foundation Grant for $17,500.00 for use in preservation planning for the courthouse. The Foundation Grant, the largest in its history, was awarded to the DCCPF in December, 2009.
The 2009 DCCF planning grant plus the match money already committed to that grant formed the basis for the Preservation Fund’s application to the National Trust for Historic Preservation Jeffris Heartland Fund for a grant to complete a Historic Structure Report for the courthouse. More information about the award is available in a separate press release.
A Historic Structure Report is widely recognized as an effective part of preservation planning, which also addresses owner goals for the use of the property. It will provide a thoughtfully considered argument for selecting the most appropriate approach to treatment prior to the commencement of work, and will outline a scope of recommended work, based on the current condition of the building.
The report will serve as an important guide for all changes made to the courthouse during the rehabilitation project, as well as information for maintenance procedures. It will record the findings of research and investigation as well as the process of physical work, for future researchers.
The grant from the Davis County Community Foundation helped make the case for getting the larger grant, demonstrating community-wide support for the Davis County Courthouse Preservation Fund and commitment to historic preservation of the Davis County Courthouse.
It is a pleasure for the Davis County Courthouse Preservation Fund to work with the Board of Supervisors and the Davis County Community Foundation to preserve this iconic building for the good of the citizens of Davis County and the general public far into the future.
